Let me paint you a picture. I am fishing with a Beetle Spin. For the uninitiated, a Beetle Spin is a tiny rubber-bodied jig with a little spinner blade attached, and it costs roughly as much as a gumball. It is the lure you buy at the gas station in Brainerd because you forgot your tackle box. It comes in a clamshell package next to the beef jerky. It is not, by any reasonable assessment, a serious piece of fishing equipment. The northern pike did not get that memo. He came out of the weeds like a missile with teeth. Like a log that decided violence was its calling. Like God looked at a barracuda and said more angry. He hit that little chartreuse rubber body with the energy of something that has never once in its life experienced consequences. The rod doubled over. I made a noise I will not describe here. For three minutes, a 36-inch apex predator and I engaged in mortal combat, mediated entirely by a lure I paid $1.89 for. The little spinner blade which exists, I can only assume, to make fish briefly curious before better judgment kicks in had apparently driven this pike into a blackout rage. When I finally lipped him, he looked at me. I looked at him. We were both embarrassed. He was embarrassed to have been bested by a Beetle Spin. I was embarrassed that my hands were shaking after catching a fish on a lure designed for crappie. I released him and he left without saying goodbye. Pros: Costs less than a candy bar. Triggers primal fury in large predatory fish. Cons: You will never feel more simultaneously lucky and underequipped in your entire life. Pairing suggestion: A Minnesota lake in June, a 6-pound spinning rod rated for nothing close to this, and zero witnesses. Some fish get caught by skill. This one was caught by a rubber bug and mutual confusion.

Classic lure that catches fish. When paired with an ultra light setup or light tackle setup you will enjoy catching smaller pan fish.

I have to share our recent fishing trip adventure! My son was determined to catch a crappie, even with the weather being pretty “crappy.” We brought along the Johnson Beetle Spin Spinnerbait, and I have to say, it worked wonders! Despite the overcast skies and chilly wind, he hooked into a beautiful crappie that was the highlight of the day. The spinnerbait was easy for him to use, and its flashy design really attracted the fish. Watching him reel in that catch made all the cold weather worth it! I highly recommend the Johnson Beetle Spin for any mom looking to make fishing fun, no matter the conditions!

These are my favorite freshwater bait. Catch just about anything of them. And of varying size as well
