Outdoor Research Men's Astroman Air Sun Hoodie

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This sun hoodie is very light weight and comfortable. It runs a little small, so size up if you want a looser fit. The material is very thin, so long-term durability is a concern. Note that the lighter colors have a lower UPF rating than the darker colors.

Big Downgrade

So disappointed. The Astroman was the best sun hoody ever. The new Astroman Air resembles the old one at first glance until you put it on. First sizing. I wanted to size up so got a medium instead of my original small. To my surprise the new medium was smaller than my original small. Next, there are no thumb loops which decreases the temperature range of the hoody. It was great to be able to keep the same hoody climbing through mountains in anywhere from 100 degree to 55 degree weather. Finally, the hood. The hood is tiny compared to the original Astroman and no longer accommodates a helmet. I can barely fit it over a helmet and if I do I can’t turn my head without the fabric restricting my movement. Hopefully there’s someone else that makes a similar climbing focused garment. Having your movement being restricted in a sun hoody is a deal breaker. Even without a helmet the hood is snug which means less sun coverage on your face.

Used To Keep Out Of The Sun

Used to keep out of the sun during 12 hours of hiking at the Grand Canyon. I'm typically a hot person but felt fine and breezy during 20 miles of hiking in the sun at the Grand Canyon.

Great Look

Super light sunshade for doing the things in. Does what it's supposed to do and I'm happy with it!

Perfect For Outdoors

Wear it on hikes and on the water. Perfect for both and all around wear.

Comfortable, Light Weight And Warm

Bought two years ago, buying in other colors for this fall

Fits Perfectly For My Summer Golf Needs

Come out with more colors/designs please. I have them in every color and I use it to golf in the PNW summers, I prefer this over the OR Echo hoodie as it has a higher UPF rating and I just like the feel of the material better.

Excellent Base Layer

My son used this as a base layer during a one week backpacking trip. The main reason I bought this was the SPF rating for someone who doesn't like to use sunblock. The zipper was great for venting while on the move.

Breaths Well And Keeps The Sun At Bay!

This does exactly what you want to do. It keeps the sun at bay! Super lightweight fabric that is soft on bare skin, although I tend to wear it with a T-shirt underneath. The hood fits easily over a ball cap and you can stretch it over a helmet although I would suggest wearing under. Different colors have different SPF properties so make sure you do your research before pulling the trigger. Great piece of kit to have your bag for hot summer days

Great Sun Hoody

Perfect for summer and people love the echo material for layering in shoulder season or warm but wet hiking in winter

Sun Hoodie

Extreme light and comfortable, unsure of durability due to how thin the fabric might be

Sun Hoody With A Zipper!

I use this for fishing on sunny days where I don’t want to constantly apply sunscreen. I love the small zip pocket so I don’t lose things over the boat rail when i bend down to release fish.

Great Hoody With Minor Qualms

I’ve put this thing through the wringer. Recently, i I wore this hoody everyday for 15 days, half of which was spent paddling in Quetico Provincial park and the other half hiking in Olympic national park. It performed gallantly in both settings. Ultimately the shirt met its end after being eaten and regurgitated by a deer in the Olympics, bummed I have to shell out for another now. Qualm 1: kind of a spendy shirt (though worth it in my book). OR is often tough to size for me, I went with a medium on this one, which after breaking it in was the right call. Their Mediums tend to be too tight in the shoulders but just right everywhere else for my 6’2” 195 frame. Regardless, the shirt is awesome, breathes well, resists the stink of repetitive daily use, and has a super functional chest pocket and a deep hood. The ability to unzip the 1/4 zip chest is really great too. My only frustration was occasionally the size of the hood. It’s honestly a big enough hood to get around a climbing helmet, I’m sure by design, but that size hood doesn’t like to stay on a normal head or hat in windy conditions. The addition of a minimalistic draw cord to cinch it down a bit would be nice.

Second one I've purchased. Extremely lightweight, comfortable, and packable. Great over a shirt or on it's own.

Great Fit

Great shirt for running. Sizing guide is accurate. Waistband on the shirt is not flexible so size up if you want a looser fit.
